Vibo Valentia was originally a Sicilian centre colonized by the people from Locri who named it Hipponion and built temples for the cult of Proserpina. Her rape by Pluto shows, as it happened here, how this myth is disputed between Greece and Sicily. Thanks to the protection of Gelone, Syracusan tyrant, and to the power it had acquired, after having been surrounded with walls, it victoriously rose against Locri; then after joining the league against Syracuse and the Lucans it look part in the battle of Elleporo in 389; the following year Dyonisus the Old attacked it partly destroying it, deported its inhabitants to Syracuse and surrendered its territory to Locri
